The Ukrainian Peace Council (formerly the Ukrainian Republican Committee of Peace Protection) was founded on September 1951, on the initiative of the best representatives of the Ukrainian intelligentsia - M. Ryl’sky, A. Malyshko, the Academicians B. Paton, M. Semenenko, V. Komisarenko, N. Rybak, M. Ryl’skyy, P. Tychyna, and other well-known people in Ukraine

Since 1951 till 1962 the organization had been headed by Academic Mykola Semenenko, then by a member of the World Peace Council Academic Vasyl Komisarenko (1962 - 1975),. Since 1975 till the last moment of his life, Oles’ Gonchar remained the unchangeable Head of the Peace Council.

In 1997 the Ukrainian Peace Council was headed by the first President of the independent Ukraine, Leonid Makarovych Kravchuk, the person, who initiated the state non-nuclear movement, as an example of  peacemaking, healthy social psychology, directed to the establishment of peace, which is a model for other countries.

The First Associate Head of the Ukrainian Peace Council, Borys Serhiyovych Zrezertsev, left the visible trace in the activities of the Ukrainian Peace Council.

Today the most respectable people of the country - scientists, writers, artists, teachers, political leaders, leaders of different kinds - constitute the Presidium of the Ukrainian Peace Council. During the years of its functioning, the Ukrainian Peace Council has become world-renowned and was numerously honored with the highest awards of the World Peace Council, the UNESCO, the United Nations Organization, and other prominent world organizations.

Viewing its activities as an inseparable part of the world peace-making process, the Ukrainian Peace Council declares openness and constant readiness to be a partner and a participant of various forms and structures of the world partnership in the line of the United Nations Organization and the UNESCO and other Non-Government Organizations’, national peace-making movements and funds.
The main aim of the organization is to unite the efforts of the community to establish peace and consent in Ukraine and beyond.
The Ukrainian Peace Council accumulates the functions of the state institutions and the non-government organizations, and embodies them through its programs, determined by the statute documents and the international agreements about cooperation.

The Ukrainian Peace Council is a co-founder of the "Vidrodzhennya" Fund; "Medycyna - Ekologia" Association; International Fund "Myr Dityam"("Peace for Children"); Associations: "Pryroda" ("The Nature"); The Ukrainian Ecologic Association "Zelenyy Svit" (“The Green World"); and of other civil society organizations
